The Public Space Summit is our annual one-day conference that include a series of workshops, panels, and networking opportunities with people like you who want to shape the future of San Francisco parks and public spaces. If you’ve ever wanted to host an outdoor event, improve your local playground, or add a mural to that eyesore of a blank wall in your neighborhood, the Public Space Summit is for you.

Tickets for the 2023 Public Space Summit are now on sale! All members of the SF Parks Alliance Community Partner Network qualify for two (2) free tickets to the Summit. Food, drinks, and snacks will be provided throughout the day for all attendees.

Sharaya Souza – Keynote

Sharaya Souza (Taos Pueblo, Ute, Kiowa), is Executive Director of the American Indian Cultural District, and is dedicated to recognizing, honoring, and celebrating American Indian legacy, culture, people, and contributions. She is an ambassador for promoting equitable resource distribution to American Indian communities, increasing Native visibility and political representation, and protecting and preserving American Indian cultural resources in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her prior work included establishing Native visibility in tech, sacred site and tribal cultural resource preservation, land use mediation, helping tribal groups gain recognition as non-federally recognized tribes, and protecting Native American human remains.

Sara Moncado – Keynote

Sara Moncada (Yaqui), M.A., is a Native educator, dancer, filmmaker, author and cultural arts advocate. She is CEO of The Cultural Conservancy, a native-led non-profit working in Indigenous land, rights and revitalization projects, is co-founder of Wise Women Circles, a women-owned media company, and is co-director of Sewam American Indian Dance, a Bay Area-based cultural arts and education organization. She presents internationally on traditional Native Foodways, arts and culture and is co-author of the book The Dance of Caring, a book exploring Native American Hoop Dance as a model for wellness.

Philip Hua – The Why & How of Public Art

Phillip Hua is an artist living and working in San Francisco. He graduated from the Academy of Art College with a degree in Illustration. Hua has created numerous public artworks all over the Bay Area as well as in Texas. His clients include the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, the San Francisco MTA, BART, San Francisco Public Works, the Cities of Sunnyvale, Dublin, Davis, Palo Alto and San Antonio, among others. Last year, he was nominated for the SFMOMA SECA award.

Kath Tsakalakis – Permits & Events: Best Practices

In 2020, Kath Tsakalakis co-founded the Friends of Lakeside Village, a fiscally sponsored project of SF Parks Alliance. A large group of volunteers is partway through a shared vision to transform the commercial corridor. Before that, Kath worked in strategy consulting for nearly 20-years, including 12-years with Bain & Company in London and San Francisco. Since retiring, Kath has used her strategic planning expertise to help various startups, schools, and nonprofits. She uses facts and research to frame problems and refocus teams on practical actions that will make a difference.

Warren Logan – Reimagining our Streets

Warren Logan is an Oakland resident with a strong history of public service and community engagement. Professionally, Warren is a government affairs advisor at Progress Public Affairs where he manages government relations and strategic communication projects. Before working in the private sector Warren worked in several public agencies including the City of Berkeley’s Transportation Division managing parking and travel demand management, the City and County of San Francisco managing shared mobility policy, and the Mayor’s Office of Oakland managing local, regional and state transportation policy.

FAQs

The Summit will take place in both indoor and outdoor settings. SF Parks Alliance will require acknowledgment of full vaccination from all attendees of the 2023 Public Space Summit (including booster shots) during registration. We also kindly encourage all staff and attendees to wear a mask during indoor sessions. We will have rapid tests and masks available at check-in.
We will continue to monitor COVID numbers and any required regulations leading up to the event and update this page and registrants as needed. For any questions about these protocols please email partners@sfparksalliance.org
Throughout the day, SF Parks Alliance will provide all attendees with breakfast, coffee, boxed lunches, and snacks. In the later afternoon we will have a “schmoozing hour” with hors devours and wine/beer. All participants are asked to bring a water bottle to help minimize waste.

All groups within SF Parks Alliance’s Community Partner Network qualify for two (2) free tickets to the Public Space Summit. Additional ticketing tier information is available on the ticketing page.

SF Parks Alliance believes that everyone has something to learn and contribute at our annual Public Space Summit. Whether you are an active volunteer in our city’s parks, a long-time community organizer who is looking to connect with like-minded folks, or an individual who is looking for inspiration and tips to engage with your neighbors, this Summit will provide the tools and connections to create lasting change in your community.

Both attendees and speakers at the Summit come from a diversity of personal and professional backgrounds, and are eager to connect at this conference and beyond.

Currently, SF Parks Alliance does not have plans for a virtual component to the 2023 Summit.

Attendees are welcome to join the Summit late or leave early, if needed.

We cannot offer a reduced ticket price for attending only part of the conference, but we will have SF Parks Alliance staff stationed outside of the venue for the entirety of the day to welcome guests who may be joining late.

The ‘Project’ track of sessions revolves around skills and ideas that you can apply directly to your project, while the ‘General’ track of sessions is more focused on case studies, panels, and talks that aim to inspire and offer opportunities to ask questions and connect with peers.
The SE PUC Community Center is served by the Muni T Line and 15 Bus.
There are bike racks on site as well as a BayWheels station in front of the Community Center on Evans.
There is street parking available in the surrounding neighborhood.
Summit attendees will also receive an exclusive promo code for BayWheels for the day of the Summit.
