Slow Streets were introduced to SF’s residential streets as a response to the pandemic and a collective need for more public space. As the program moves towards permanence, SF Parks Alliance is committed to providing support for local residents serving as stewards. Our experience working with hundreds of community groups across the city has informed a robust toolkit of resources that will help you plan events, organize neighbors, initiate art projects, and add greening to your Slow Street.
The introduction of Slow Streets at the start of the pandemic happened quickly, but almost immediately, communities sprang into action to activate and improve their local Slow Streets. The embrace of this program has translated into widespread support from local residents, with some Slow Streets reporting over 90% in approval ratings.
The engagement from local residents and Slow Street “Mayors” has been so integral to the program’s success that SFMTA has made local stewardship groups a requirement for any Slow Street slated to remain after the pandemic. As the program moves towards permanence, SF Parks Alliance is committed to providing support for local residents serving as stewards.
